한국철도공사는 3일 철도운행 및 조직운영의 효율성과 생산성 향상을 위해 기존 12개 지역본부에서 8개 지역본부체제로 조직개편을 단행한다고 밝혔다.

이에 경북지역을 관할구역으로 하는 경북본부(영주시 휴천동 소재)는 대구본부를 흡수하면서 기존 1,300여명의 직원이 3,100여명으로 늘어나고, 대구, 경주, 포항, 구미, 김천 등을 관할 구역으로 편입하면서 명실 공히 경북지역 전체를 온전히 관할하는 지역본부로 다시 태어날 것으로 기대된다.

한국철도 경북본부의 역사는 일제 강점기 1943년으로 거슬러 올라가 안동철도사무소로 발족되어 1964년 1월 5일 영주철도국으로 이전된 이후 55년간 영주지역을 기반으로 강원도, 충청북도, 경상북도 3개도에 걸쳐 중앙선, 태백선, 영동선, 경북선 4개 노선 690km를 관장하는 철도교통 중심도시로 자리 매김하였고, 1960~70년대 산업화시기에는 석탄, 시멘트를 수송하여 우리나라 산업화에 지대한 역할을 수행하였다. 그러나 1990년대 이후 석탄, 시멘트산업이 사양길에 들어서면서 경북본부의 역할도 크게 줄어들어 2004년 KTX의 개통과 동시에 철도교통의 오지로 전락하고 말았다.

그러나 낙후된 경북북부지역을 살리기 위해 2016년 3월 경북도청이 안동예천으로 이전한데 이어 여주～문경간 중부내륙철도가 막바지 공사를 하고 있고, 문경～점촌 간 경북선 연결공사도 임박한 상황으로 최근 대구신공항 건설예정부지인 의성까지의 철도연결의 필요성은 그 어느때 보다 크다 할 것이다.

이러한 철도교통 수요 증가가 예상되는 시기에 우리지역의 철도교통을 관장하는 한국철도 경북본부가 확대 개편된 것에 대해 더불어민주당 경북도당은 환영하는 바이며 출산율 저하와 교통오지로 전락한 우리지역을 살려내고, 살기좋은 지역으로 탈바꿈 시키기 위해 모든 노력을 경주할 것이다.

아울러, 더불어민주당 경북도당에 설치된 ‘중부내륙고속철도 및 산업발전 특별위원회’와 경상북도, 한국철도 경북본부, 자치단체 간에 협의체를 구성하여 철도교통 중심도시로 거듭날 수 있도록 최선을 다 할 것을 약속한다.

The Democratic Party of Korea's Gyeongbuk Provincial Party welcomed the expansion and reorganization of the Korean Railroad Gyeongbuk Headquarters, which oversees railway traffic in Korea at a time when the demand for rail transportation is expected to increase, and will make every effort to revive and transform the region into a better place to live.

In addition, the Special Committee on the Development of Central Inland High Speed Rail and Industrial Development established in the Gyeongbuk Provincial Party of the Democratic Party of Korea, and a consultative body among Gyeongsangbuk-do, the Gyeongbuk Headquarters of the Korea Railroad, and the local government will do their best to be reborn as a central railway transportation city.
