 “누리호 성공 그 이후, 한화가 여는 민간 우주시대”

제주서 쏘아올린 한화의 우주비전…김승연 회장, 새 도전 선언

김승연·김동관 부자(父子) ‘스페이스 드림’…한국 우주산업 새 지평 연다

[한국유통신문= 김도형 기자] 한화그룹 김승연 회장이 새해 첫 경영 행보로 국내 최대 ‘민간 위성 생산 허브’인 한화시스템 제주우주센터를 방문해 한화의 우주산업 비전을 제시했다. 김 회장은 “우주로 가는 것이 한화의 사명”이라며 “도전을 멈추지 않는 한화의 정신으로 대한민국을 5대 우주강국으로 이끌겠다”고 강조했다.

지난 1월 8일 제주 서귀포시 하원동 현장을 찾은 김승연 회장은 그룹의 우주사업을 총괄하는 김동관 부회장과 함께 우주환경시험장, 전자파시험장 등 핵심 시설을 둘러보고 임직원을 격려했다. 제주우주센터 방문은 김 회장에게 이번이 처음이다.

김 회장은 방명록에 “어려워도 반드시 가야 할 길을 가는 것, 그것이 한화의 사명입니다. 제주우주센터와 함께 대한민국을 지키는 대표 기업으로 우뚝 섭시다”라고 적어 한화의 뚝심 있는 도전 정신을 드러냈다.

방문 일정 동안 김 회장은 진공·극저온·극고온 등 혹독한 우주 환경을 모사한 우주환경시험장과, 고출력 전자기파 속에서도 장비 작동을 검증하는 전자파시험장을 시찰했다. 이후 임직원들과 오찬을 함께하며 “우리의 힘으로 우리의 인공위성을 쏘아 올리는 꿈이 누리호 4차 발사 성공으로 현실이 됐다”며 “달 궤도선에 이어 달 착륙선 추진 시스템까지 개발하게 된 것은 한화의 기술력과 집념의 결실”이라고 평가했다.

김 회장은 “한화의 위성이 기후변화를 관측하고, 안보를 지키며, 인류의 더 나은 삶에 기여하는 것이 우리가 하는 사업의 진정한 가치”라며 “제주, 고흥, 순천, 창원을 잇는 우주산업 클러스터를 중심으로 대한민국을 세계 5대 우주강국으로 끌어올릴 것”이라고 비전을 밝혔다.

특히 그는 “제주우주센터는 단순한 사업장이 아니라 한화의 꿈과 미래가 현실로 구현되는 공간”이라며 “우주는 도전을 멈추지 않는 자에게만 길을 내준다”고 덧붙였다.

김승연 회장은 1980년대 화약사업 시절부터 “언젠가 한화의 손으로 우주에 간다”는 꿈을 밝혀온 것으로 알려졌다. 그의 오랜 열망은 김동관 부회장에게로 이어져, 김 부회장은 2021년 엔지니어 중심 조직인 ‘스페이스 허브(Space Hub)’를 출범시키며 한화의 민간 우주사업을 체계적으로 추진해왔다.

이 같은 투자는 한화에어로스페이스의 발사체 기술과 한화시스템의 위성 기술을 결합해 ‘뉴스페이스(New Space)’ 시대의 선도 기업으로 자리 잡게 했다.

지난해 말 준공된 제주우주센터는 약 3만㎡ 부지(연면적 1만1400㎡) 규모의 국내 최대 민간 위성 생산 시설로, 매월 8기, 연간 최대 100기의 위성을 양산할 수 있다. 이곳에서는 글로벌 수준의 해상도 15cm급 초저궤도(VLEO) 고해상도 SAR 위성이 개발 중이며, 향후 위성 개발·생산·발사·관제·AI 영상분석에 이르는 전 과정을 하나의 밸류체인으로 통합할 예정이다.

한화시스템은 2023년 1m급 해상도 SAR 위성 발사에 성공한 데 이어 50cm·25cm급 및 초고해상도 SAR 위성 기술 개발을 완성 단계에 두고 있다. 제주가 가진 지리적 장점도 빼놓을 수 없다. 최남단에 위치한 제주우주센터는 안정된 낙하 구역과 이상적인 발사각 확보로 위성의 생산과 발사 간 물리적 거리를 최소화한다.

김 회장은 방문을 마치며 “제주우주센터를 기반으로 한화가 꿈꿔온 우주산업 생태계를 완성해 나갈 것”이라며 “도전에 멈춤이 없는 한화의 정신으로 인류의 새로운 미래를 열겠다”고 밝혔다.

Chairman Kim Seung-yeon, who visited the site in Ha Won-dong, Seogwipo, Jeju on Jan. 8, toured key facilities such as the space environment test site and the electromagnetic wave test site along with Vice Chairman Kim Dong-kwan, who oversees the group's space projects, and encouraged executives and employees. This is the first time for Chairman Kim to visit the Jeju Space Center.

Chairman Kim wrote in his guest book, "It is Hanwha's mission to take the path that must be taken even if it is difficult. Let's stand tall as a representative company that protects the Republic of Korea along with Jeju Space Center," expressing Hanwha's strong spirit of challenge.

During the visit, Chairman Kim inspected a space environment test site that simulates harsh space environments such as vacuum, cryogenic, and cryogenic, and an electromagnetic wave test site that verifies the operation of equipment even in high-power electromagnetic waves. Later, during a luncheon with executives and employees, he said, "Our dream of launching our satellites with our own power has become a reality with the success of the fourth launch of the Nuri," adding, "It is the fruit of Hanwha's technology and tenacity to develop a lunar lander propulsion system following the lunar orbiter."

Chairman Kim said, "The real value of our business is that Hanwha's satellite observes climate change, protects security, and contributes to the better life of mankind," adding, "It will elevate Korea to the world's top five space powers, centering on the space industry cluster linking Jeju, Goheung, Suncheon and Changwon."

In particular, he added, "The Jeju Space Center is not just a workplace, but a space where Hanwha's dreams and future are realized as a reality."

Chairman Kim Seung-yeon has reportedly revealed his dream of "going to space with Hanwha's hands someday" since his days in the gunpowder business in the 1980s. His long-standing desire led to Vice Chairman Kim Dong-kwan, who has systematically promoted Hanwha's private space business by launching the "Space Hub," an engineer-centered organization, in 2021.

This investment combines Hanwha Aerospace's projectile technology and Hanwha System's satellite technology to establish itself as a leading company in the era of "New Space."

The Jeju Space Center, which was completed at the end of last year, is the largest private satellite production facility in Korea with a site of about 30,000 square meters (total floor area of 11,400 square meters), and can mass-produce up to 100 satellites per month, eight per month. A global-level ultra-low orbit (VLEO) high-resolution SAR satellite is being developed here, and the entire process from satellite development, production, launch, control, and AI image analysis will be integrated into one value chain in the future.

Hanwha System is in the process of completing the development of 50cm·25cm class and ultra-high resolution SAR satellite technology following its successful launch of a 1-meter resolution SAR satellite in 2023. Jeju's geographical advantages cannot be left out. The Jeju Space Center, located at the southernmost point, minimizes the physical distance between satellite production and launch by securing a stable drop zone and an ideal launch angle.

At the end of the visit, Chairman Kim said, "We will complete the space industry ecosystem that Hanwha has dreamed of based on the Jeju Space Center," adding, "We will open a new future for mankind in the spirit of Hanwha that does not stop at challenges."
