예스국제친선협회, 주한미군과 함께한 한미국제문화교류 수상스포츠 행사 성료

구미 학생들과 주한미군, 수상 스포츠로 소통과 문화 교류의 장 열어

영어 소통 자신감 향상과 다문화 이해 증진에 뜻깊은 기여

[한국유통신문= 김도형 기자] 예스국제친선협회(회장 서보덕)가 주최한 ‘한미국제문화교류 수상스포츠 행사’가 지난 8월 24일 상주 낙단보에서 성공적으로 개최됐다. 이날 행사에서는 구미시 초·중·고 학생들과 주한미군 장병들이 함께 카약, 밴드웨건, 수상스키 등 다양한 수상 스포츠를 즐기며 뜻깊은 교류의 시간을 가졌다.

참가 학생들은 평소 영어에 대한 부담을 내려놓고 미군과 적극적으로 소통하며 살아있는 영어 교육을 경험했다. 언어와 문화의 벽을 허물고 수상 스포츠를 매개로 자연스러운 영어 대화와 문화 교환이 이루어졌으며, 학생들의 자신감 향상과 글로벌 마인드 형성에 큰 도움이 됐다.

행사 진행과 통역 봉사에 참여한 김나경(선주고 2학년), 우희연(경구고 2학년) 학생은 “처음엔 학생들이 영어를 틀릴까 걱정했지만, 미군과 어울리며 점차 먼저 영어로 인사하고 자유롭게 대화하는 모습을 보면서 매우 뿌듯했다”고 밝혔다. 두 학생은 통역을 넘어 문화 도우미로 활약하며 친구들이 영어로 소통할 수 있도록 격려했다.

수상 스포츠 활동 이후에는 삼각김밥, 라면 등 간식을 나누며 더 깊은 대화를 이어갔다. 한 미군은 직접 만든 케이크를 학생들과 나누며 손수 미국의 가정식 문화를 소개했다. 학생들은 미국 생활에 대해 묻고, 미군들은 한국에 대해 배우는 시간도 갖는 등 서로의 문화를 생생하게 체험했다.

행사에 참가한 미군 SGT Lee는 “한국 학생들과 함께 즐거운 시간을 보내며 한국을 더 잘 이해하게 됐다”며 “이런 교류의 기회가 앞으로도 계속 이어지길 바란다”고 전했다.

예스국제친선협회 서보덕 대표는 “학생들이 영어 자신감과 국제적 마인드를 얻는 계기가 되길 바라며, 앞으로도 글로벌 인재로 성장할 수 있는 교류 프로그램을 지속할 것”이라고 강조했다. 이번 교류 행사는 한미 양국 청소년 간 우정과 문화 이해의 폭을 넓혔다는 평가를 받고 있다.

[Korea Distribution Newspaper = Reporter Kim Do-hyung] The "Korea-U.S. International Cultural Exchange Water Sports Event" hosted by the Yes International Friendship Association (Chairman Seo Bo-deok) was successfully held in Nakdanbo, Sangju on August 24. At the event, students from elementary, middle and high schools in Gumi City and U.S. soldiers in Korea enjoyed various water sports such as kayaking, bandwagon, and water skiing and had a meaningful exchange.

Participating students put down their usual burden of English and experienced living English education by actively communicating with the U.S. military. Breaking down the barriers of language and culture, natural English conversations and cultural exchanges were made through water sports, and it helped students improve their confidence and form a global mind.

Kim Na-kyung (second grade of Seon High School) and Woo Hee-yeon (second grade of Kyunggu High School), who participated in the event's hosting and interpreting service, said, "At first, I was worried that the students would get English wrong, but I was very proud to see them gradually greet each other in English and talk freely with the U.S. military." The two students worked as cultural helpers beyond interpretation, encouraging their friends to communicate in English.

After the water sports activities, they continued the deeper conversation by sharing snacks such as triangular gimbap and ramyun. One U.S. soldier hand-made cake with the students and introduced the American home-style culture. Students asked about life in the U.S. and U.S. soldiers had time to learn about Korea, experiencing each other's culture vividly.

SGT Lee, a U.S. soldier who participated in the event, said, "I had a good time with Korean students and came to understand Korea better," adding, "I hope these opportunities for exchanges will continue in the future."

"We hope that this will serve as an opportunity for students to gain confidence and international mindset in English, and we will continue our exchange program to grow into a global talent," said Seo Bo-deok, CEO of Yes International Friendship Association. The exchange event is said to have broadened the understanding of friendship and culture between the youth of South Korea and the U.S.
