새뮤얼 버틀러 (1835년-1902년)는 재치, 철학적 숙고, 다양한 주제에 대한 비판적 관찰로 유명한 영국 작가이자 풍자가였다. 

그는 소설 "Erehwon"과 풍자 작품 "모든 육체의 길"로 가장 잘 알려져 있다

"선서는 말에 불과하고, 말은 바람에 덧없이 흘러갈 뿐"이라는 당신의 말은 말의 힘과 신뢰성에 대한 버틀러의 회의를 반영한다.
