한국과 뉴질랜드를 잇는 따뜻한 손길, 한인 사회의 공동체 회복을 위한 협력의 장 마련

(뉴질랜드= KTN= 박춘태 기자= 뉴질랜드 주오클랜드 대한민국 총영사관(총영사 김홍기)은 지난 8월 9일 한인 봉사단체 ‘낮은 마음(Lowly Heart Charitable Trust)’의 주요 관계자들을 관저로 초청하여, 그들의 헌신적인 활동에 대한 감사의 뜻을 전하고, 향후 협력 방안을 논의하는 자리를 가졌다고 밝혔다.

이날 만남에서 김홍기 총영사는 사회적 약자와 소외된 이웃들을 돕기 위해 헌신하는 봉사자들과 단체들을 적극적으로 발굴하고 지원할 의지를 피력했다. 또한, 한인 사회의 공동체 회복을 위해 노력하는 ‘낮은 마음’과의 협업 가능성을 모색하며, 상호 의견을 교환했다.

‘낮은 마음’은 2014년 경제적 어려움을 겪는 이웃과 노숙인들을 돕기 위한 봉사활동으로 시작된 단체다. 2017년에 공식적으로 설립된 이후, 뉴질랜드 한인 동포들을 위한 다양한 문화활동으로 그 활동 범위를 확장해왔다. 오클랜드 알바니 지역에 위치한 작은 문화공간 ‘숨, 쉼’을 중심으로, 모든 이들이 참여할 수 있는 프로그램을 운영하며, 이를 통해 한인 사회의 공동체 의식을 고양하고 있다.

이 공간에서는 비영리 한국 서점을 운영하며, 한국에서 발행된 신간 도서의 구입과 주문을 지원한다. 아울러, 기증된 250권의 도서를 비판매 목적으로 보관하고 있다. 또한, ‘낮은 마음’은 자활 향초 공방 프로그램을 통해 노숙인과 빈곤 가정을 돕고 있으며, 향초 판매 수익은 자활 프로그램과 공간 운영에 사용된다.

이 단체는 비영주권자 및 난민 가정 자녀들을 위한 공부방을 운영하고 있으며, 오클랜드의 여러 지역에서 빈곤 가정 자녀들을 위한 학습 지원도 병행하고 있다. 특히, 오클랜드 내 임시 주거시설과 헨더슨 지역에서는 노숙인을 위한 지역 모임과 자활 공방, 그리고 중고 물품 판매점을 운영하며, 매주 수요일 푸드뱅크 음식 나눔 행사를 지속적으로 개최하고 있다. 현재 20명 이상의 자원봉사자들이 ‘낮은 마음’의 다양한 프로그램에 참여하고 있으며, 이들의 헌신적인 노력은 지역 사회의 큰 힘이 되고 있다.

주오클랜드 대한민국 총영사관과 ‘낮은 마음’의 이번 만남은 뉴질랜드 한인 사회의 복지와 공동체 회복을 위한 의미 있는 첫걸음으로 평가되며, 앞으로의 협력과 발전이 더욱 기대된다.

Warm hands connecting Korea and New Zealand to establish a place for cooperation to restore the Korean community

(New Zealand = KTN = Reporter Park Choon-tae = Consulate General of the Republic of Korea (Consulate General Kim Hong-ki) in Auckland, New Zealand, invited key officials from the Korean volunteer organization Low Heart Charitable Trust to their residence on August 9 to express their gratitude for their dedicated activities and discuss ways to cooperate in the future.

At the meeting, Consul General Kim Hong-ki expressed his willingness to actively discover and support volunteers and organizations dedicated to helping the socially underprivileged and marginalized neighbors. In addition, they exchanged opinions, exploring the possibility of collaboration with the 'low mind' who strives to restore the community of the Korean community.

Low Heart is an organization that began in 2014 as a volunteer activity to help neighbors and homeless people suffering from financial difficulties. Since its official establishment in 2017, it has expanded its scope to various cultural activities for Korean-Americans in New Zealand. Focusing on the small cultural space 'Breath and Rest' located in Albany, Auckland, it operates a program in which everyone can participate, thereby enhancing the sense of community in the Korean community.

This space operates a non-profit Korean bookstore and supports the purchase and order of new books published in Korea. In addition, 250 donated books are stored for non-selling purposes. In addition, 'Low Heart' helps the homeless and poor families through a self-supporting scented candle workshop program, and the profits from the sale of scented candles are used for self-supporting programs and space management.

The organization operates study rooms for non-permanent and refugee children, and also provides learning support for children from poor families in various parts of Oakland. In particular, temporary housing facilities in Oakland and the Henderson area operate local gatherings, self-support workshops, and used goods stores for the homeless, and continue to hold food bank food sharing events every Wednesday. Currently, more than 20 volunteers are participating in various programs of "low heart," and their dedicated efforts are a great help to the community.

The meeting between the Consulate General of the Republic of Korea in Auckland and Low Heart is considered a meaningful first step toward the welfare and community recovery of New Zealand's Korean community, and cooperation and development are expected in the future.
