Pharmaceutical Bio-Collaboration Accelerates Cooperation With U.S. Bio-Cluster

Strengthen cooperation with major U.S. bio-cluster institutions and organizations such as Boston and San Diego

(KTN = U.S.) Reporter Kim Do-hyung =While bio-industry ecosystems such as Boston, the U.S., are drawing attention due to President Yoon Suk Yeol's recent state visit to the U.S. and his policy to foster bio-clusters, the domestic pharmaceutical bio-industry is speeding up its entry into the U.S. bio-cluster.

The Korea Pharmaceutical Bio Association (Chairman Noh Yeon-hong) announced on the 12th that it has strengthened networking with major local institutions and organizations in Boston, San Diego, and Colorado, and sought ways for the domestic pharmaceutical bio industry to enter advanced markets.

K-Bio 'Attention' In Boston, World's Largest Bio Cluster

Chairman Roh Yeon-hong visited Boston on the occasion of "BIO USA 2023," which will be held from the 5th to the 8th of this month. Boston is the world's largest bio cluster with pharmaceutical bio companies, research institutes, and hospitals centered on prestigious universities such as MIT and Harvard. The association has continued to interact with major institutions and organizations in Boston through a global open innovation (GOI) strategy that supports domestic pharmaceutical bio companies' entry into overseas markets.

In particular, President Yoon Suk Yeol recently announced that he would push for a "Boston-Korea Project" in which Korean and Boston research institutes cooperate to embody a "bio alliance" with the United States and create a "Korean version of Boston Cluster" benchmarking Boston.

In this situation, Chairman Roh visited the BIO USA venue on the 7th and encouraged participants by touring the booths of companies such as Lotte Biologics, Samsung Biologics, Celltrion, ST Farm and Huons Global, as well as the Korean Pavilion, which houses Kangstem Biotech and Woojung Bio. It also decided to meet with officials from Biote Canada and the National Institutes of Health (NIH) to discuss future cooperation measures such as technology transfer and strengthen partnerships.

More than 700 people attended the "Korea Night Reception," co-hosted by seven organizations, including the Association, the Korea Health Industry Promotion Agency, and the Advanced Renewable Medical Industry Association, in connection with BIO USA on the 7th. Separately, on the 6th, the previous day, the Korean Embassy in the U.S., the Korea Health Industry Promotion Agency's U.S. branch (KHIDI-USA), and the Cambridge Innovation Center (CIC) venture cafe co-hosted the IR announcement.

Chairman Roh Yeon-hong, who attended these events, said, "We could feel the status and enthusiasm of K-Bio in Boston, USA, with more than 500 Korean companies participating after the U.S. and Korea Night Reception."

"Science is not an expensive luxury, but a necessity for economic development," he said, referring to the case in which Berniba Bush led the U.S. development in Boston where he studied.

World's Largest Market: 'Strengthening Bio-Alliance'

On the 9th, Roh visited the institution in charge of the MIT ILP at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and held a meeting with John Robert, general director of MIT ILP. In June 2020, the association joined the membership in the form of a consortium in the pharmaceutical bio sector for the first time in MIT ILP history. Despite the COVID-19 situation over the past three years, the association and MIT ILP held several online seminars on on oncology and drug delivery, and positive evaluations were made on the exchange, including the first face-to-face event in November last year.

In particular, as domestic pharmaceutical bio companies are actively entering the U.S. market and the government highly evaluates the possibility of the Boston cluster, it will continue to seek ways to cooperate between the association and MIT ILP in the future.

After the meeting, MIT Executive Briefing was held with Ildong Pharmaceutical, Yuhan Corporation, Chong Kun Dang, and Huons attending. EB is a place to share MIT's latest research results. In this EB, the introduction and active discussion of PROTAC, which is attracting attention as a new drug development platform by selectively destroying certain transcription factors (proteins that regulate gene expression in cells), and Organs on Chips, which are expected to replace animals in clinical trials.

An executive of a pharmaceutical company who participated in the event said, "Through MIT's latest research results, we were able to identify major trends in global new drug development and confirm our willingness to cooperate with MIT and domestic pharmaceutical bio companies."

Roh then held a meeting with executives of various organizations, including Kim Dae-sik, head of the Boston branch of the Korean Pharmaceutical Association (KASBP), and Chung Da-jung, chairman of the New England Life Sciences Association (NEBS), to seek ways to interact with the association and domestic pharmaceutical bio companies. Local experts in the U.S. emphasized the need for continuous exchanges with the association and the establishment of a network in the future. In particular, it was suggested that if academic exchanges between domestic pharmaceutical bio companies and each organization become active, networks will be strengthened and excellent human resources will be recruited.

In addition, representatives of the association, including Chairman Roh, visited LG Chem, which recently acquired U.S. anticancer drug company Abeo Pharmaceuticals, Tiba Biotech, and Ingenia, which develops antibody treatments for microvascular recovery. He also visited the Harvard Wys Institute, Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, and LabCentral, where innovative research is conducted in Boston, USA, to examine structural factors and backgrounds to derive results.

In addition, the association will attend the Business & Leadership Conference held by the U.S. Healthcare Distribution Union (HDA) in Colorado on the 10th with Usin Labotachi, Hanlim Pharmaceutical, and Huons USA to help participating companies secure distribution networks in the U.S.

On the 12th, San Diego signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with BioCom California (Biocom CA) to continue networking such as information exchange and seminars in the future. BioCom is a major hub in the California-based life science industry, with more than 1,700 global pharmaceutical companies, venture capital and bio companies as members.

보스턴·샌디에이고 등 미국 주요 바이오 클러스터 기관·단체와 협력 강화

노연홍 회장 “K-바이오 국제적 위상 실감…GOI 통한 산업 혁신 지원”

(KTN= 미국) 김도형 기자= 최근 윤석열 대통령의 미국 국빈 방문과 바이오 클러스터 육성 정책에 따라 미국 보스턴 등 바이오산업 생태계가 주목받는 가운데, 국내 제약바이오업계의 미국 바이오 클러스터 진출이 속도를 내고 있다.

한국제약바이오협회(회장 노연홍)는 미국 보스턴·샌디에이고·콜로라도 등에서 현지 주요 기관 및 단체들과 네트워킹을 강화하고, 국내 제약바이오산업의 선진 시장 진출 방안을 모색했다고 12일 밝혔다.

K-바이오, 세계 최대 바이오 클러스터 보스턴서 ‘주목’

노연홍 회장은 이달 5일부터 8일까지 열리는 ‘BIO USA 2023’을 계기로 보스턴을 방문했다. 보스턴은 매사추세츠공과대학(MIT), 하버드 등 명문대를 중심으로 제약바이오기업·연구소·병원 등이 밀집한 세계 최대의 바이오 클러스터다. 협회는 국내 제약바이오기업의 해외 시장 진출을 지원하는 글로벌 오픈 이노베이션(GOI) 전략을 통해 보스턴의 주요 기관·단체와 교류를 지속해왔다.

특히 최근 윤석열 대통령이 미국과 ‘바이오동맹’을 구체화하기 위해 우리나라와 보스턴의 연구기관이 협력하는 ‘보스턴-코리아 프로젝트’를 추진하고, 보스턴을 벤치마킹한 ‘한국판 보스턴 클러스터’를 조성하겠다고 밝힌 바 있어, 제약바이오산업의 미국 시장 진출이 더욱 탄력 받을 전망이다.

이 같은 상황에서 7일 BIO USA 행사장을 찾은 노 회장은 강스템바이오텍, 우정바이오 등이 들어선 한국관을 비롯해 롯데바이오로직스, 삼성바이오로직스, 셀트리온, 에스티팜, 휴온스글로벌 등 기업 부스를 둘러보고 참가자들을 격려했다. 또 바이오테캐나다(biotecanada)와 미국 국립보건원(NIH) 관계자를 만나 향후 기술이전 등 협력방안을 논의하고, 파트너십을 강화키로 했다.

7일 BIO USA와 연계해 협회와 한국보건산업진흥원, 첨단재생의료산업협회 등 7개 기관이 공동 주최한 ‘코리아 나잇 리셉션’에는 당초 사전 등록한 508명(5.30 기준)을 훌쩍 넘는 700여명이 참석, 활발한 네트워킹의 시간을 가졌다. 이와 별도로 전날인 6일 주미대한민국대사관과 한국보건산업진흥원 미국지사(KHIDI-USA), 케임브리지 이노베이션센터(CIC) 벤처 카페가 CIC에서 공동 개최한 ‘코리아 바이오 이노베이션 나잇’에 참여한 국내 바이오기업의 IR 발표에도 인파가 몰린 가운데 비즈니스 파트너링과 교류가 이뤄졌다.

이들 행사에 참석한 노연홍 회장은 “BIO USA 행사장에 미국 다음으로 많은 500여 개의 한국 기업이 참가하고, 코리아 나잇 리셉션도 문전성시를 이루는 등 미국 보스턴 현지에서 K-바이오의 위상과 열기를 느낄 수 있었다”며 “글로벌 오픈 이노베이션을 통한 현지 네트워크 강화로 협회가 국내 제약바이오산업의 글로벌 시장 진출을 적극 지원할 것”이라고 밝혔다.

또 그는 1945년 미국 과학연구개발국장을 맡아 미국의 경제 발전을 이끈 버니바 부시가 “과학은 값비싼 호사가 아니라 경제 발전에 필수”라며 과학기술에 대한 정부 지원을 촉구, 미국 발전을 이끈 사례를 언급하고, “버니바 부시가 공부한 보스턴 현지에서 그에 대한 통찰을 돌이키는 계기가 됐다”고 전했다.

세계 최대 시장 미국서 ‘바이오 동맹 강화’

9일에는 매사추세츠공과대학 산학협력프로그램(MIT ILP) 주관 기관을 방문, 노 회장은 존 로버트 MIT ILP 총괄이사와 간담회를 가졌다. 협회는 지난 2020년 6월 회원사들과 MIT ILP 사상 처음 제약바이오 부문 컨소시엄 형태로 멤버십에 가입한 바 있다. 이 자리에서는 지난 3년간 코로나19 상황에도 불구, 협회와 MIT ILP가 수차례 종양학, 약물전달 등에 대해 온라인 세미나를 개최하고 지난해 11월 최초의 대면행사 등 교류가 이어진 것에 대한 긍정적인 평가가 나왔다.

특히 국내 제약바이오 기업들이 미국 시장에 적극 뛰어들고 있고, 정부가 보스턴 클러스터의 가능성을 높게 평가하는 상황에서 향후에도 협회와 MIT ILP간 지속적인 협력방안을 모색키로 했다.

간담회 이후에는 일동제약, 유한양행, 종근당, 휴온스 등이 참석한 가운데 MIT 이그제큐티브 브리핑(Executive Briefing)이 진행됐다. EB는 MIT의 최신 연구성과 등을 공유하는 자리다. 이번 EB에서는 질병의 원인이 되는 특정 전사인자(세포 내에서 유전자 발현을 조절하는 단백질)를 선택적으로 파괴해 새로운 신약개발 플랫폼으로 주목받는 기술(PROTAC)과, 임상실험에 있어 동물을 대체할 것으로 기대되는 오가노이드 분야 최신 기술(Organs on Chips)의 소개 및 활발한 토론이 이뤄졌다.

행사에 참여한 한 제약사 임원은 “MIT의 최신 연구성과를 통해 글로벌 신약개발의 주요 동향을 파악하고, MIT와 국내 제약바이오기업과의 협력 의지를 확인할 수 있었다”고 소감을 밝혔다.

이어 노 회장은 CIC에서 김대식 재미한인제약인협회(KASBP) 보스턴 지부장, 정다정 뉴잉글랜드생명과학협회(NEBS) 회장 등 각 단체 임원진과 간담회를 갖고 협회 및 국내 제약바이오기업들과 교류 방안을 모색했다. 이 자리에서 미국 현지 전문가들은 향후 협회와의 지속적인 교류 및 네트워크의 장 마련의 필요성 등을 강조했다. 특히 국내 제약바이오기업과 각 단체의 학술적 교류가 활발해지면 네트워크 강화와 우수한 인재 영입 등이 이뤄질 것이라는 제안이 나왔다.

아울러 노 회장을 비롯한 협회 대표단은 앞서 한미생명과학인협회(KAPAL) 이병하 회장, 유기준 보스턴 총영사 등과 간담회를 통해 협업사항을 발굴하고, 최근 미국 항암제 기업 아베오 파마슈티컬스를 인수한 LG화학과 차세대 리보핵산(RNA) 기술로 주목받는 티바 바이오테크(Tiba Biotech), 미세 혈관 회복을 위한 항체 치료제를 개발하는 인제니아 테라퓨틱스 등을 방문했다. 또 미국 보스턴에서 혁신적인 연구가 이뤄지는 하버드 비스연구소(Wyss Institute), 다나-파버(Dana-Farber) 암연구소, 랩센트럴 등을 찾아 성과 도출을 위한 구조적인 요인과 배경 등을 살펴봤다.

이밖에도 협회는 10일 미국 콜로라도에서 미국헬스케어유통연합(HDA)이 개최하는 비즈니스 리더십 컨퍼런스(Business&Leadership Conference)에 우신라보타치, 한림제약, 휴온스USA 등과 참석, 참가기업들의 미국 내 유통망 확보를 지원키로 했다.

이어 12일 샌디에이고에서는 미국 바이오컴 캘리포니아(Biocom CA)와 양해각서(MOU)를 체결, 향후 정보 교류와 세미나 등 네트워킹을 지속키로 했다. 바이오컴은 캘리포니아에 본부를 둔 생명과학 산업의 주요한 허브로 1700여개 글로벌 제약사, 벤처캐피탈, 바이오기업 등이 멤버로 소속돼 있다.

노 회장은 “우리나라가 제약바이오 글로벌 중심국가로 도약하기 위해서는 적극적인 글로벌 오픈 이노베이션이 필수적”이라며 “제약바이오강국으로 도약하겠다는 정부의 의지에 발맞춰 산업계가 더욱 활발하게 움직이고 목표 달성의 계기를 만들겠다”는 각오를 밝혔다.
