LG Electronics decided to withdraw from the mobile business due to intensifying competition and continued poor performance.

Emphasizing corporate beliefs, Smith stressed the need for a new benchmark for new technologies, arguing that global IT companies should consider how to use technologies for "safety" and "protection" rather than human convenience.

Humans have already fully adapted to high-tech technologies triggered by the 4th industrial revolution such as smartphones over the past 10 years and are living in an era of an entirely new paradigm called the SNS revolution.

Every move of mankind is being managed, monitored, and controlled, but the awareness of the fact that it is becoming a slave of high technology has reached a point where it cannot keep up with the pace of technology development.

Therefore, it is an era in which it is necessary to upgrade human mental capabilities to overcome high-tech technologies.

기조연설자로 나선 김현석 대표이사 사장(CE부문장)은 향후 10년을 ‘경험의 시대(Age of Experiences)’로 정의하며, 경험의 시대에는 다양한 개인의 라이프스타일에 따라 공간을 변화시키고 도시를 재구성해야 한다고 주장했다.

소비자들이 제품이 가져다주는 편리함, 안정, 즐거움 등 삶의 긍정적 경험을 기대하며 같은 개인의 요구가 모여 기술 혁신을 이끌어 간다는 것이다.

2021년 스미스 마이크로소프트(MS) 사장은 CES 2021 기조연설에서 기대와는 다르게 신제품 소개 대신 ‘첨단기술을 인간이 어떻게, 왜 통제해야 하는지’를 놓고 30분에 걸쳐 첨단기술에 대한 우려를 나타냈다.

현재 첨단기술은 이를 제어할 수 있는 기준점이 마련되지 않은 상태에서 발전에만 급급한 상황이며, AI 기반 안면인식이나 음성인식으로 신원을 파악해 범죄를 예방할 수 있는 반면에 개인정보 유출 위험성에 대해 경각심을 일깨웠다.

기업의 신념을 강조한 스미스 사장은 글로벌 IT기업은 인간의 편의가 아닌 ‘안전’과 ‘보호’를 위해 기술을 어떻게 사용하는지에 대해 고민해야 한다고 주장하면서 새로운 기술에 대한 새로운 기준점의 필요성을 역설했다.

지난 10년 동안 스마트폰 등 4차산업혁명으로 촉발된 첨단기술에 인간은 이미 완벽히 적응했고 SNS혁명이라는 전혀 새로운 패러다임의 시대를 살고 있다.

전 인류의 일거수 일투족이 관리되고 감시되어 통제되고 있는 상황으로 치닫고 있으나, 첨단기술의 노예가 되어가고 있다는 사실에 대한 자각은 기술의 발전속도를 따라갈 수 없는 지경에 이르렀다.

따라서 첨단기술을 극복할 수 있는 인간 정신능력의 고도화가 필요한 시대다.
