명절이 되면 우리나라의 며느리들은 시댁에 헌신하느라 몸과 마음이 무겁다.

부부 모두에게 즐거워야 될 명절이 어느 한쪽이 일방적인 희생을 강요 당해온 것은 우리나라의 전통탓이다.

하지만 우리나라 유학을 대표하는 퇴계 선생의 부인에 자상함은 남다르다.

 

퇴계와 결혼 후 부인 권씨는 여러 가지 실수를 범했지만, 퇴계는 때로는 사랑으로 때로는 인내심으로 포용

하여 부부의 도리를 다했다. 한번은 온 식구가 분주하게 제사상을 차리는 도중 상 위에서 배가

하나 떨어졌다. 권씨는 얼른 그것을 집어 치마 속에 감추었다. 퇴계의 큰형수가 그것을 보고 나

무랐다.

"동서, 제사상을 차리다가 제물이 떨어지는 것은 우리들의 정성이 부족해서라네. 근데 그걸 집

어 치마 속에 감추면 쓰겠는가?"

방안에 있던 퇴계가 그 소리를 듣고 밖으로 나와 대신 사과했다.

그러자 큰형수가 얼굴에 미소를 띠며 말했다.

"동서는 참으로 행복한 사람일세, 서방님 같은 좋은 분을 만났으니 말야."

얼마 후 퇴계가 아내 권씨를 따로 불러 치마 속에 배를 감춘 이유를 물었다. 권씨가 먹고 싶어서

그랬다고 하자, 퇴계는 그 배를 손수 깎아 주었다고 한다.

또 하루는 권씨가 흰 두루마기를 다림질하다가 조금 태우고서는, 하필 붉은 천을 대고 기웠다.

그럼에도 퇴계는 아무렇지도 않게 태연히 입고 외출을 했다. 사람들이 그것을 보고 경망스럽다.

고 탓하자. 퇴계가 웃으면서 말했다.

"허허, 모르는 소리 말게. 붉은색은 잡귀를 쫓고 복을 부르는 것이라네. 우리 부인이 좋은 일이

생기라고 해준 것인데 어찌 이상하단 말인가. "
