성선설을 주장한 맹자는 사람이 태어나면서 악을 거부하고 선을 실행하려는 도덕적인 마음을 지녔다고 했다.

이와 반대로 성악설을 주장한 순자는 사람은 누구나 다 관능적 욕망과 생의 충동이 일고 개인의 이익을 추구하게 되는 것이라고 봤다.

순자는 인간의 본성은 악이며, 항상 욕망에 의해서 싸움이 그치지 않으므로 이를 고치기 위해 예의를 배우고 정신을 수련해야한다고 주장했다.

오늘날 인터넷상으로 악성댓글과 비난이 판을 치고 사회기강이 문란해지는 이유는 성악설이 작용하기 때문으로 사회적 차원의 예법은 무엇보다 중요하다.

그러므로 개인의 마음 수련을 게을리하지 않고 사람에 대한 박애정신을 실천할 수 있도록 동기부여하는 바른 집단의식의 힘이 중요하다.
