운명설화에 따르면 운명이란 사주, 팔자라고도 하며, 현실세계를 사는 인물이 어찌하지 못하는 초월적인 질서를 말한다.

 

운명이 초월적 질서에 의해 인간에게 개입되면서 행운과 불행이 동시에 야기된다.

 

운명에 관한 설화는 인간이 의지를 가지고 살아가면서 예측하지 못한 것들을 주술이나 신화, 종교 등에 의존하던 시대의 산물이다.

 

운명설화는 운명을 인간의 노력으로 거부할 수 없는 것으로 보고 기정 사실화하려는 결말을 가진 이야기와, 인간의 노력에 의해 회피하거나 극복할 수 있다는 결말을 가진 이야기로 양분된다.

 

예정된 운명대로 실현되는 이야기 유형은 대체로 운명에 순응하는 인물의 이야기이다. 거부하려고 해도 거부할 수 없으며, 주어진 운명에 따를 수밖에 없는 결과를 보여 준다.

 

또한 죽어야만 하는 운명을 현실적으로 구현하는 과정에서 주인공의 비극적 죽음이란 결말을 제시하기도 한다.

 

운명에 대한 설화는 구체적인 대상이나 신격, 초월적 힘 등에 의존하면서도 운명을 수용하는 쪽과 거부하는 쪽으로 나뉜다.

 

두 입장이 조합되고 변형되면서 다양한 수성과 얼개의 이야기가 전개되었는데, 이는 곧 운명론의 다극화된 양상을 반영하는 것이다.

 

운명설화는 미지의 힘에 대한 인간의 항변과 수용의 모습을 다양하게 보여준다.

 

기약할 수 없는 미래와 무참한 죽음 앞에서  미얀마 사람들은 처절하리만치 용감하게 자신들의 운명을 개척해 나가고 있다. 지금 이 세상은 이들의 앞날을 응원하는 자와 방관하는 사람으로 구분되는 양상이다.
