Boston held panel discussions with VCs through 'K-Bio Innovation Night'

The Korea Innovation and Drug Consortium Foundation (CEO Huh Kyung-hwa, hereinafter referred to as the KIMCO Foundation) announced on the 12th that it hosted a "Meet K-Bio Investors" session at the Cambridge Innovation Center (CIC) in Boston on the 6th (local time).

The event was attended by ▲ Choi Hong-seok, senior manager of Yuanta Investment, ▲ Park In-ae, team manager of Daily Partners, ▲ Noh Yoon-ah, manager of Stone Bridge Ventures, led by Huh Kyung-hwa, CEO of the KIMCo Foundation, and presented methodologies for strategic investment.

In particular, the event was held during the "BIO USA 2023" event in Boston, one of the world's best bio clusters, and more than 100 experts, including representatives, researchers and investors of bio companies, participated.

Choi Hong-seok, senior manager of Yuanta Investment, said, "The investment environment has become difficult, but VCs' core investment strategies have not changed much," adding, "However, risk management for investment is on the rise."

Park In-ae, team manager of Daily Partners, said, "As the investment environment has recently become difficult, the valuation of biotech (corporate valuation value) tends to become more and more real," adding, "We will consider strong scientific evidence and the possibility of global partnerships first for future investments."

"The marketability of technology is very important from an investment strategy point of view, so investment will be focused on companies with platform technology that can be used in various ways," said Noh Yoon-ah, manager of Stonebridge Ventures.

Panelists who attended the meeting expressed sympathy for the importance of scientific basis for establishing corporate value and technological scalability in a difficult investment environment. In addition, after the panel discussion, there was a free networking position with Biotech in Boston and domestic VCs.

Heo Kyung-hwa, CEO of the KIMCo Foundation, who hosted the event, said, "Now is the time for investors to lead the market in a difficult investment environment, and it is important to find new breakthroughs by actively cooperate with global VCs."

한국혁신의약품컨소시엄재단(대표 허경화, 이하 KIMCo재단)은 지난 6일(현지시간) 미국 보스턴 케임브리지 이노베이션센터(CIC)에서 한국보건산업진흥원 주최로 열린 ‘코리아 바이오 이노베이션 나잇’을 통해 ‘K-바이오 인베스터와의 만남(Meet K-Bio Investors)’ 세션을 주관했다고 12일 밝혔다.

 

이날 행사는 허경화 KIMCo재단 대표를 좌장으로 ▲최홍석 유안타 투자 시니어 매니저 ▲박인애 데일리파트너스 팀 매니저 ▲노윤아 스톤브릿지벤처스 매니저 등이 참석, K-바이오의 최신 투자 동향을 조명하고 전략적 투자에 대한 방법론을 제시했다.

 

특히 이번 행사는 세계 최고의 바이오 클러스터로 꼽히는 보스턴에서 열린 ‘BIO USA 2023’ 행사 기간 중 개최, 바이오 기업 대표·연구자·투자자 등 전문가 100여 명이 참가해 성황을 이뤘다.

 

최홍석 유안타 투자 시니어 매니저는 “투자환경은 어려워졌지만 VC들의 핵심적인 투자전략은 큰 변화가 없다”며 “다만 투자에 대한 리스크 관리가 더욱 강화되는 추세”라고 전했다.

 

박인애 데일리파트너스 팀매니저는 “최근 투자환경이 어려워짐에 따라 바이오텍에 대한 벨류에이션(기업 평가 가치)이 점점 더 현실화되는 경향이 있다”며 “향후 투자에는 강력한 과학적 근거와 글로벌 파트너십 가능성을 최우선적으로 고려할 것”이라고 밝혔다.

 

노윤아 스톤브릿지벤처스 매니저는 “투자전략 관점에서 기술의 시장성은 굉장히 중요하기 때문에 다각도로 활용 가능한 플랫폼 기술 보유 기업에 투자가 집중될 것”이라며 “플랫폼 기술은 그 확장성으로 인해 같은 금액을 투자했을 때 그 시장성이 훨씬 크다”고 강조했다.

 

이날 참석한 패널들은 어려워진 투자 환경 속에서 기업가치 확립을 위한 과학적 근거 마련과 기술 확장성의 중요성 등에 공감을 표했다. 또 패널토론 이후에는 보스턴 주재 바이오텍과 국내 VC와의 자유로운 네트워킹 자리가 마련됐다.

 

행사를 주최한 허경화 KIMCo재단 대표는 “어려운 투자환경에서 데스밸리를 극복하기 위한 바이오텍의 노력과 치열한 옥석 가리기가 이뤄지는 지금이 투자자들이 시장을 선도할 시간”이라며 “국내뿐만 아니라 글로벌 투자까지 연계해 글로벌 VC와도 적극 협력하는 등 새로운 돌파구를 찾는 것이 중요하다”고 말했다.
