글로벌 임상시험 시장에서 한국의 위치와 서울의 위상 변화

[한국유통신문= 김도형 기자] 2024년을 기준으로 전 세계 제약사들이 주도하는 한국의 의약품 임상시험 점유율은 3.46%로, 세계 시장에서 6위를 차지했다. 이는 미국, 중국, 호주, 스페인, 독일에 이어 6위로, 2020년과 2021년에는 6위였고, 2022년에는 5위로 상승했다. 2023년에는 4위까지 올라갔지만, 2024년에는 두 계단 하락하면서 6위로 자리했다.

서울은 의약품 임상시험 도시 순위에서 중요한 변화를 겪었다. 2024년, 서울의 점유율은 1.32%로, 중국 베이징에 이어 2위를 차지했다. 서울은 2017년 이후 계속해서 1위를 유지했지만, 2024년에는 베이징에 1위를 내주었다. 베이징은 2020년 7위에서 2021년 2위로 급상승했으며, 이후 꾸준히 2위 자리를 지켰고, 2024년에는 1위로 올라섰다.

중국의 다른 주요 도시인 상하이(3위), 광저우(7위)도 상위 10위 안에 포함되며, 중국은 총 3개 도시가 글로벌 임상시험 도시 순위에 자리잡았다.

한국은 의약품 임상시험의 중요한 중심지로 자리잡고 있으며, 제약사들이 선호하는 국가로 지속적인 발전 가능성을 보여준다. 하지만 2024년에는 다른 국가와 도시들이 급격히 부상하면서 한국의 순위에 변동이 생겼다. 서울의 임상시험 점유율이 감소한 것은 글로벌 시장에서 경쟁이 더 치열해졌음을 시사한다. 한국 제약산업이 앞으로 더욱 전략적인 접근을 할 필요가 있다.

전 세계 제약사 주도 의약품 임상시험에서 한국과 서울의 위치 변화는 의약품 개발과 임상시험의 중요성을 다시 한번 강조한다. 2024년 한국은 6위로 하락했지만, 서울은 여전히 중요한 글로벌 임상시험 도시로서의 역할을 하고 있다. 한국의 임상시험 시장이 더욱 발전하려면 글로벌 경쟁력을 강화하는 노력이 필요하다.

[Korea Distribution Newspaper = Reporter Kim Do-hyung] As of 2024, Korea's share of clinical trials for drugs led by pharmaceutical companies around the world stood at 3.46 percent, ranking sixth in the global market. It was sixth behind the United States, China, Australia, Spain, and Germany, sixth in 2020 and 2021, and fifth in 2022. It rose to fourth place in 2023, but fell two places to sixth place in 2024.

Seoul underwent a significant change in the ranking of the city for clinical trials for drugs. In 2024, Seoul came in second to Beijing, China, with a share of 1.32 percent. Seoul continued to maintain the No. 1 spot since 2017, but in 2024, it yielded the top spot to Beijing. Beijing soared from the 7th place in 2020 to the 2nd place in 2021, and then steadily maintained the 2nd place thereafter, rising to the 1st place in 2024.

Other major cities in China, Shanghai (3rd) and Guangzhou (7th), are also in the top 10, with a total of three cities in China ranked as global clinical trial cities.

Korea is positioned as an important center for pharmaceutical clinical trials, and as a country favored by pharmaceutical companies, it shows the potential for continued development. However, the rapid rise of other countries and cities in 2024 has changed Korea's ranking. The decline in Seoul's clinical trial share suggests that competition in the global market has become fiercer. The Korean pharmaceutical industry needs to take a more strategic approach going forward.

Changes in the locations of Korea and Seoul in drug clinical trials led by pharmaceutical companies around the world emphasize the importance of drug development and clinical trials once again. In 2024, Korea fell to sixth place, but Seoul still plays a role as an important global clinical trial city. Efforts are needed to strengthen global competitiveness in order for the Korean clinical trial market to develop further.
