KIMCo재단, BIOCOM CA와 MOU 체결…지속 협력 강화 기대

(전국= KTN) 김경 기자= 한국혁신의약품컨소시엄재단(대표 허경화, 이하 KIMCo재단)은 12일(현지시간) 미국 샌디에이고 알렉산드리아 그래드랩스(Alexandria GradLabs)에서 미국 바이오컴 캘리포니아(대표 조 패네타, 이하 바이오컴)와 ‘크로스보더(국경간 거래) 파트너링 컨퍼런스’를 개최했다고 13일 밝혔다.

미국 캘리포니아에 본사를 두고 있는 바이오컴은 글로벌 제약사, 바이오벤처, 벤처캐피탈(VC) 등 1,700곳 이상을 회원사로 보유한 생명과학 단체다. 생명과학 기업들이 혁신적인 제품과 기술을 개발하고 상업화할 수 있는 환경이 조성되도록 정부와 협력, 산업계 네트워크 구축, 자금조달 확보, 첨단 교육 프로그램 도입 등을 추진하고 있다.

이날 행사는 미리 선발된 한국 및 캘리포니아 바이오텍이 참여해 IR 발표를 진행하고, 제약바이오 업계 전문가와 투자자들이 패널 토론하는 방식으로 마련했다. 현장에는 한국과 캘리포니아 등 50여 개 기업에서 100여 명이 참석, 양국 간 파트너링에 대한 높은 관심을 나타냈다. 특히, 이날 행사에는 김영완 주로스앤젤레스(LA) 총영사, 노연홍 한국제약바이오협회 회장 등 주요 내빈이 참석해 의미를 더했다.

KIMCo재단이 선정, 참가한 바이오벤처의 발표는 ▲미토콘드리아 및 세포 대사 조절제 개발(이휘성 엘마이토테라퓨틱스 대표) ▲DNA 손상 복구 저해제 개발(백태곤 아름테라퓨틱스 대표) ▲자폐증 치료제 개발 (신찬영 뉴로벤티 대표) 등을 주제로 이뤄졌다. 이어진 질의응답에서 행사에 참석한 투자사들은 각 바이오벤처가 보유한 기술의 차별성, 활용 범위, 추후 사업화 전략 등에 대해 물었다.

각 기업의 IR 발표 이후 이어진 패널 토론에서는 ▲국가 간 사업개발 및 투자 활성화 ▲벤처 캐피탈 관점의 투자 ▲미국 내 파트너링 기회의 모색 등에 대한 논의가 오갔다.

이어 KIMCo재단 글로벌진출 자문위원인 김현종 플란 대표를 좌장으로 첫 번째 패널 토론이 진행됐다. 박재홍 동아에스티 사장은 “국가 간의 사업개발에 있어 가장 중요한 것은 기술의 혁신성이고, 그 다음은 상호간 원활한 의사소통과 서로의 생태계에 대한 정보의 접근”이라고 말했다. 국찬우 KB인베스트먼트 본부장은 “많은 한국 기업들이 원활한 글로벌 임상시험 및 글로벌 시장 진출을 위해 미국 투자 유치를 희망한다”며 국가 간 투자에 대한 의지를 보였으며, 노엘 지 노보홀딩스 책임은 “한국의 바이오산업은 혁신의 변곡점에 있으며, 많은 제약사와 투자사들이 한국에 관심을 갖게 되는 시기가 올 것”이라고 전망했다.

두 번째 패널 토론에서는 임나래 플란 이사를 좌장으로 최홍석 유안타인베스트먼트 부장, 박인애 데일리파트너스 팀장, 데이비드 크린 칼디프 어드바이저리 파트너, 헌터 리드 알렉산드리아 벤처 인베스트먼트 책임이 한국과 캘리포니아의 투자 환경과 전망을 논의했다.

마지막 패널 토론에서는 제니퍼 지오토니니 케이어 풀모사이드 사업총괄을 좌장으로 윤태진 유한양행 상무, 유준수 동아에스티 실장, 호세 오레스코 써모피셔 사이언티픽 이사, 네일 벤스 BMS 부사장이 미국 내 파트너링 기회 확대 방안에 대해 의견을 나눴다.

이날 행사에서 조 패네타 바이오컴 대표는 “한국과 미국 양국에서 제약바이오산업이 번창하는 것은 도전과 변화에 대응해 지속적인 개선과 혁신을 추구하는 전문성 있는 기관과 네트워크의 결과”라며 “오늘과 같은 행사를 통해 우리는 지속적인 발전을 이루고 국가 간의 교류를 촉진할 것이며, 최종적으로 우리 각자의 핵심 목표인 환자에게 더 나은 서비스를 제공하겠다”고 말했다.

허경화 KIMCo재단 대표는 “이제는 국내 제약바이오기업의 글로벌 진출을 가속하여, 지속적인 성과를 토대로 글로벌 제약 바이오강국 도약의 꿈을 실현할 때”라며 “KIMCo재단은 바이오컴과 면대면 협력을 통해 미 서부 지역을 교두보로 실용적인 제약바이오산업 네트워크와 리소스를 형성하고, 글로벌 협업과 국내 기업의 미국 진출을 지원할 예정”이라고 말했다.

이밖에도 이날 KIMCo재단과 바이오컴은 향후 지속적인 협력을 위한 양해각서(MOU)를 체결했다. KIMCo재단과 바이오컴은 이번 전략적 파트너십을 통해 공동투자 및 공동개발을 위한 오픈 이노베이션 플랫폼 구축에 협력하고, 컨퍼런스와 이벤트 등을 통해 양국 간의 지식 공유와 네트워킹 기회를 제공키로 했다.

BioCom, headquartered in California, USA, is a life science organization with more than 1,700 companies including global pharmaceutical companies, bio ventures, and venture capital (VC) as its members. To create an environment where life science companies can develop and commercialize innovative products and technologies, they are working with the government to establish industrial networks, secure financing, and introduce advanced education programs.

The event was organized by pre-selected Korean and California Biotech participating in IR presentations and panel discussions by experts and investors in the pharmaceutical bio industry. More than 100 people from more than 50 companies, including Korea and California, attended the site, expressing high interest in partnering between the two countries. In particular, major guests, including Consul General Kim Young-wan of Los Angeles (LA), and Roh Yeon-hong, chairman of the Korea Pharmaceutical Bio Association, attended the event, adding meaning.

The bio-venture selected and participated by the KIMCo Foundation was announced under the theme of ▲ development of mitochondrial and cell metabolism modulators (CEO Lee Hwi-sung), ▲ development of DNA damage recovery inhibitors (CEO Baek Tae-gon, Arum Therapeutics), and ▲ development of autism treatments (CEO Shin Chan-young, CEO of Neuroventy). In a subsequent question-and-answer session, investors who attended the event asked about the differentiation of technologies held by each bio-venture, the scope of use, and future commercialization strategies.

In the panel discussion that followed the IR announcement of each company, discussions were held on ▲ business development and investment activation between countries ▲ investment from a venture capital perspective ▲ the search for partnering opportunities in the United States.

The first panel discussion was then led by Kim Hyun-jong, CEO of Flan, an advisor to the global expansion of the KIMCo Foundation. "The most important thing in business development between countries is technological innovation, followed by smooth communication between each other and access to information about each other's ecosystem," said Park Jae-hong, president of Dong-A ST. Kook Chan-woo, head of KB Investment, said, "Many Korean companies want to attract U.S. investment to smoothly conduct global clinical trials and enter the global market," and Noel G. Novo Holdings said, "Korea's bio industry is at an inflection point for innovation, and the time will come when many pharmaceutical and investment companies are interested in Korea."

In the second panel discussion, Choi Hong-seok, head of Yuanta Investment, Park In-ae, head of Daily Partners, David Clean Caldiff, and Hunter Reed, head of Alexandria Venture Investment, discussed the investment environment and prospects of Korea and California.

In the final panel discussion, Yoon Tae-jin, managing director of Yuhan Corporation, Yoo Jun-soo, director of Dong-A ST, Jose Oresco Thermo Fisher Scientific, and Vice President of BMS, led by Jennifer Giotony Cair, Pulmoside Business Manager, discussed ways to expand partnership opportunities in the U.S.

At the event, Cho Panetta, CEO of BioCom, said, "The prosperity of the pharmaceutical bio industry in both Korea and the United States is the result of professional institutions and networks that continue to improve and innovate in response to challenges and changes."

It is time to accelerate domestic pharmaceutical bio companies' global expansion and realize their dream of becoming a global pharmaceutical bio powerhouse based on continuous performance, said Huh Kyung-hwa, CEO of the KIMCo Foundation.

In addition, the KIMCo Foundation and BioCom signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) for continuous cooperation in the future. Through this strategic partnership, the KIMCo Foundation and BioCom will cooperate in establishing an open innovation platform for joint investment and joint development, and provide knowledge sharing and networking opportunities between the two countries through conferences and events.
