대구서구청소년수련관, 주한 미군 캠프캐롤 498 전투지원대대 장병들과 함께 ‘마비정 벽화마을 탐방’ 행사

(경북= KTN) 선주고등학교 지하늘 객원기자= 대구서구청소년수련관 청소년방과후아카데미에서는 2022년 10월 29일 주한 미군 캠프캐롤 498 전투지원대대 소속 장병들과 친선 도모를 위하여 ‘마비정 벽화마을 탐방’ 행사를 하였다. 

이 행사는 미군들의 한국의 문화 체험과 한국 청소년들의 해외 교류를 위하여 구미시 학생들도 초청되어 영어통역봉사를 하면서 주한 미군과 대구서구청소년아카데미 학생 및 선생님들의 의사소통을 도왔다. 

방과후아카데미에서는 마비정 벽화마을의 길목 5개 지점에 선생님과 통역봉사자를 배치하여 미군들과 청소년들을 9개 팀으로 나누어 탐방을 진행하였다. 각 팀들은 마비정 벽화마을을 걸으며 절대음감, 참참참, 일심동체, 해적 룰렛, 가위바위보의 미션들을 하며 미군들과 청소년들의 영어의사소통 능력을 키우고 유대감을 형성할 수 있었다. 가위 바위 보를 제외한 4개의 게임들은 미군들에게는 처음 해 보는 게임이었다. 

절대음감 게임은 구미중학교 서정현 학생이 통역을 하였다. 연습을 할 때는 학생들이 미군들 적극적으로 도와주었다. 대나무 숲을 통과하는 지점에서는 ‘참참참’ 게임을 하였다. 구미 현일중학교 권현진 학생은 임수진 선생님의 설명을 차분하게 영어로 통역을 하였다. 이 게임은 고개를 오른쪽, 왼쪽으로 움직이거나 정지하는 단순한 게임이지만 모두 이 게임을 하면서 가을 단풍처럼 아름다운 웃음들을 보였다. 마을 정자에서는 일심동체 게임을 하였다. 구미 선주고등학교 지하늘 학생은 전교회장의 경험을 살려 게임을 영어로 능숙하게 진행하였다. 일심동체는 단어를 듣고 동시에 팀원 모두가 동일한 자세를 취하면 이기는 게임이다. 이 게임을 하면서 미군과 한국 학생들은 서로의 생각이 다름을 이해하거나 때로는 비슷함을 느끼며 심리적 거리감을 줄이고 협력하여 게임을 즐길 수 있었다. 박영희 영어통역자원 봉사자가 진행한 해적룰렛 게임은 미군들의 반응이 가장 좋았던 게임이었다. 칼을 통에 꽂을 때 마다 긴장이 흐르고 해적이 튀어나왔을 때는 모두가 소리치며 즐거워했다. 

학생들은 미션 수행과 벽화 마을을 돌면서 같이 사진도 찍고 미군들에 대해 궁금한 점을 물어보았다. 미군들도 이에 대해 환하게 웃으며 미군 생활, 고향, 취미, 게임, 영화와 음악 등의 질문에 대답을 해주기 위해 노력하였다 대구서구청소년수련관 명예청소년지도사인 서보덕 선생님은 위에 대한 영어 질문지를 준비하여 학생들이 미군들과 대화를 할 수 있도록 도왔다. 학생들과 미군들은 서로의 이름을 외우는 미션들을 함께 하면서, 아이들은 영어에 대한 부담감을 이겨내고 적극적으로 소통을 하려고 하였다. 

벽화마을 탐방을 마치고 마을 회관에 모여 미군들과 청소년들은 함께 떡과 두부도 만들어 먹으며 한국의 전통 음식에 대해 배우는 기회도 가졌다. 서로의 적극적으로 소통하려는 의지 덕분에 미군들과 청소년들은 빠르게 친해져 어울려 밥을 먹고 사진도 찍고, 같이 땅따먹기 게임도 하는 등 나이와 국가를 뛰어넘어 친구가 되어 놀았다.

이번 행사에는 미군 부대 대대장 류선 중령과 미군 굿네이버(Good Neighbor) 프로그램 담당자인 군종목사 유세준 대위도 참여하여 이 번 행사에 많은 관심을 보였다. 서로 소통이 원활하지 않을 때는 통역 봉사단을 이용하여 서로를 더욱 관심을 가지고 이해하고자 하는 모습이 청소년들의 공동체 의식을 함양시키고 자신감을 키울 수 있는 발판이 되었을 거라고 기대한다. 

(Gyeongbuk = KTN) Seonju High School Underground Guest Reporter = On October 29, 2022, the Daegu Seo-gu Youth After School Academy held a "Mabijeong Mural Village Tour" event to promote friendship with soldiers of the 498 U.S. Camp Carol 498 Combat Support Battalion in Korea. Students from Gumi City were also invited to help communicate with students and teachers of the U.S. Army in Korea and the Daegu Seo-gu Youth Academy by providing English interpretation services for U.S. soldiers' cultural experiences and Korean youth exchanges.

At the after-school academy, teachers and interpreter volunteers were placed at five points at the road of Mabijeong Mural Village, and the U.S. soldiers and teenagers were divided into nine teams to conduct a tour. Each team walked through Mabijeong Mural Village and did missions such as Absolute pitch, Chamchamcham, One Mind, Pirate Roulette, and Rock-paper-scissors, which allowed U.S. soldiers and teenagers to develop English communication skills and bond. Except for rock-paper-scissors, four games were new to U.S. soldiers.

Seo Jung-hyun, a student at Gumi Middle School, interpreted the absolute pitch game. When practicing, the students actively helped the U.S. soldiers. At the point of passing through the bamboo forest, the game of Cham Cham Cham was played. Kwon Hyun-jin, a student at Gumi Hyunil Middle School, calmly interpreted Lim Soo-jin's explanation in English. It's a simple game where you move your head to the right, left, or stop, but everyone showed beautiful smiles like autumn leaves while playing the game. In the village pavilion, they played a game of one mind and body. The underground students of Gumi Seonju High School played the game skillfully in English, taking advantage of the experience of the former president. One-body is a game that wins when all team members listen to words and take the same posture at the same time. While playing the game, U.S. military and Korean students could understand each other's differences or sometimes feel similar, reducing psychological distance and enjoying the game in cooperation. The pirate roulette game, hosted by Park Young-hee, an English interpreter volunteer, was the most popular game among U.S. soldiers. Every time the knife was inserted into the barrel, tension flowed, and when the pirate popped out, everyone shouted and enjoyed it.

The students carried out missions and toured the mural village to take pictures together and ask questions about the U.S. soldiers. The U.S. soldiers also smiled brightly and tried to answer questions such as U.S. military life, hometown, hobbies, games, movies and music Seo Bo-deok, an honorary youth instructor at the Daegu Seo-gu Office Youth Training Center, prepared an English questionnaire about the above to help students talk to U.S. soldiers. Students and U.S. soldiers tried to overcome the burden of English and actively communicate with each other by doing missions to memorize each other's names.



After the tour of the mural village, the U.S. soldiers and teenagers gathered at the village hall and had an opportunity to learn about traditional Korean food by making rice cakes and tofu together. Thanks to the willingness to actively communicate with each other, the U.S. soldiers and teenagers quickly became close and played friends beyond their ages and countries, such as eating meals, taking pictures, and playing land-picking games together.

Lieutenant Colonel Ryu Sun, commander of the U.S. military unit, and Captain Yoo Se-jun, a military pastor in charge of the Good Neighbor program, also participated in the event, showing a lot of interest in the event. When communication with each other is not smooth, it is expected that using the interpreter volunteer group to be more interested in and understand each other will serve as a stepping stone to foster a sense of community and develop confidence.
