자연을 표현할 때 임 작가는 톱밥으로 캔버스에 요철을 주고, 나이프를 사용하여 색을 올린다. 이는 자연의 거칠고 척박한 면모를 표현하기 위한 기법이다. 인물화에서는 크로키를 기반으로 무의식의 감정을 다양한 색과 선으로 묘사하며, 반복적인 수정 과정을 통해 완성도를 높인다.​
