10월 6~13일 웨스턴갤러리 하반기 초대전, 꽁치와 훈민정음 결합한 회화 세계 조명

[한국유통신문= 김도형 기자] 미국 로스앤젤레스(LA)에서 최아숙 작가의 ‘훈민꽁치’ 연작을 조명하는 전시가 열린다. 꽁치와 훈민정음, 즉 한글을 결합한 독창적 작업 세계를 통해 한국적 정서와 동시대 미술의 확장 가능성을 함께 보여주는 자리다.

LA 웨스턴갤러리는 오는 10월 6일부터 13일까지 하반기 기획초대전으로 최아숙 작가의 전시를 개최한다고 9일 밝혔다. 전시는 평일 오전 10시부터 오후 4시까지 진행되며, 최 작가가 40년간 이어온 회화 작업 중 최근작인 ‘훈민꽁치’ 연작을 중심으로 구성된다.

이번 전시는 친숙한 바다 생명체인 꽁치의 역동성과 우리 민족의 대표 문화유산인 훈민정음의 조형성을 결합한 작품들을 선보인다. 은빛 비늘과 유영하는 생명체의 형상을 한글의 자음과 모음으로 풀어내며, 한국적 정서를 현대 회화의 언어로 확장한 점이 특징이다.

최 작가는 꽁치를 거친 파도를 견디며 앞으로 나아가는 생명력의 상징으로 바라봤다. 그는 은빛 몸체 위에 훈민정음의 자음과 모음을 새겨 넣으며, 삶의 무게를 견디는 존재의 의미를 표현했다.

최 작가는 “꽁치는 단순한 바다의 생명체가 아니라 거친 파도를 정면으로 마주하며 끊임없이 앞으로 나아가는 역동적인 생명력”이라며 “따뜻한 한글의 서사와 꽁치의 멈추지 않는 유영이 이 시대를 살아가는 이들에게 위로와 도약의 에너지가 되기를 바란다”고 말했다.

최아숙 작가는 회화뿐 아니라 영상, 설치미술, 굿즈 등으로 작업 영역을 넓혀가고 있다. 주최 측은 이번 전시가 한국 문화의 조형적 가치와 평화의 메시지를 세계 관객에게 전하는 계기가 될 것으로 기대하고 있다.

이번 전시는 Hope & PEACE Foundation이 주관하며, 김동수 이사장은 한국 미술이 세계 무대에서 정신적·문화적 메시지를 전하는 역할을 확대해야 한다고 강조했다.

[Korea Distribution Newspaper = Reporter Kim Do-hyung] An exhibition will be held in Los Angeles to highlight the series of "Hunmin Saury" by Choi Ah-sook. It is a place to showcase Korean sentiment and the possibility of expanding contemporary art through a creative work world that combines saury and Hunminjeongeum, or Hangeul.

LA Western Gallery announced on the 9th that it will hold Choi Ah-sook's exhibition as a planned invitation in the second half of the year from October 6 to 13. The exhibition will run from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on weekdays and will be centered on the recent series of "Hunmin Saury" among Choi's 40 years of painting work.

The exhibition will showcase works that combine the dynamics of saury, a familiar sea creature, and the formability of Hunminjeongeum, the representative cultural heritage of our people. It is characterized by the fact that silver scales and the shape of swimming creatures are released with consonants and vowels in Hangeul, and Korean sentiment is extended to the language of modern painting.

Choi viewed the saury as a symbol of vitality moving forward while enduring the waves. He engraved the consonants and vowels of Hunminjeongeum on the silver body, expressing the meaning of being who endured the weight of life.

"The saury is not just a creature of the sea, but a dynamic vitality that constantly moves forward facing the rough waves head on," Choi said. "I hope that the warm Korean narrative and the endless swimming of the saury will be an energy of comfort and leap for those living in this era."

Choi Ah-sook is expanding her scope of work to include not only paintings but also videos, installation art and goods. Organizers expect the exhibition to serve as an opportunity to convey the formative value of Korean culture and the message of peace to the global audience.

The exhibition is organized by the Hope & PEACE Foundation, and Chairman Kim Dong-soo emphasized that Korean art should expand its role in conveying spiritual and cultural messages on the world stage.
