한편, 임종엽 작가의 초대전은 오는 4월 20일(예정) 북수원에 위치한 갤러리 다움 (롯데시네마 1층 다움 베이커리 카페 내) 개관전으로 개최된다. 이번 전시에서는 단순해 보이는 색채와 형태 속에 수많은 덧칠로 형성된 깊은 층위와, 작가 특유의 섬세한 감각을 직접 확인할 수 있다. 특히 “숨과 숨 사이”라는 찰나의 순간을 생명력과 고요함으로 확장해 나가는 그의 작품 세계를 깊이 있게 감상할 수 있는 자리가 될 것이다.

Im Jongyeop is a mid-career Korean contemporary artist who has gained recognition for his distinctive body of work that combines philosophical inquiry with a uniquely Korean aesthetic sensibility. The central concept that runs throughout his work is “the space between breaths.” This refers to the invisible interval between inhalation and exhalation—a space in which creation, dissolution, and tension arise. Through repetitive processes of layering and erasure, he expresses this interval as an accumulation of time. In other words, the artist visualizes invisible existence and the flow of being.

Contrasting structures frequently appear in his work. Dual elements such as openness and closure, expansion and contraction, creation and extinction, and male and female form dynamic tensions and balances within the pictorial space. Through these relationships, he reveals principles of harmony, conflict, and cyclical movement. Based on this visual language, Im Jongyeop integrates Korean sensibility with modernity, reinterpreting traditional elements—such as emptiness, nature, and breath—through a contemporary abstract vocabulary. Critics often regard his work as a representative example of the fusion of “Korean sentiment and modern form.”

By applying hundreds to thousands of layers in a single work, he creates surfaces that appear nearly empty yet embody a profound density and powerful energy. Inspired by the breathing patterns of traditional Korean pansori, his work can be described as philosophical abstraction that expresses the invisible “breath” and the “flow of existence” through emptiness and repetition. Ultimately, his paintings can be understood as images that seem to contain nothing, yet in fact hold the greatest fullness.

This particular work is SHH 066. Centered on the harmony between emptiness and life, it explores everyday elements—such as heaven and earth, inhalation and exhalation, openness and closure, expansion and contraction—through a yin-yang perspective. The painting embodies the dynamic interplay of mutual generation and opposition, capturing transformation and balance within the canvas.

Im Jongyeop’s artistic world is characterized by a structure that is both simple and profound. He maximizes empty space while simultaneously embedding within it a sense of density and depth, demonstrating an exceptional command of form. Although his colors and shapes may appear restrained and minimal, the rich tonal variations and depth created by countless layers of paint reveal his unique artistic sensibility.

In particular, his work visually manifests the vitality and stillness found in “the space between breaths.” This stems from his exploration of traditional Korean art, especially the breathing patterns in pansori, the pauses between them, and the expressive interjections (chuimsae) that fill those intervals. Here, emptiness is not mere void, but a space imbued with both profound stillness and intense vitality. This philosophy permeates his entire body of work, inviting viewers to encounter and experience this life force for themselves. In this way, the SHH series goes beyond static imagery to convey a narrative of life and harmony within emptiness.

Meanwhile, Im Jongyeop’s invitational exhibition is scheduled to open on April 20 at Gallery Daum in Suwon (located inside the Daum Bakery Café on the first floor of Lotte Cinema, Buk Suwon), as part of the gallery’s inaugural exhibition. This exhibition offers an opportunity to experience firsthand the deep layers formed by countless applications of paint, as well as the artist’s refined and distinctive sensibility. In particular, it will provide a meaningful occasion to engage with his artistic world, where fleeting moments “between breaths” are expanded into expressions of vitality and stillness.
