Clayton Alderfer's ERG theory is a three-stage theory about survival, relationships, and the desire for growth.

The need for survival is human physiological and safety, the need for relationships is social relationships and belonging, and the need for growth is self-realization and respect.

David McClelland's theory of motivation for achievement also states that the three-stage theory is about achievement, affinity, and power needs.

The need for achievement is the achievement of challenging goals, the need for affinity is the need for social relationships and intimacy, and the need for power is the need for influence.
