The Jangtaesan Natural Recreation Forest, which has grown with humans for the past half a century, reminds us of the emptiness of time and the greatness of nature.

Songpa Lim Chang-bong, an independence activist who loved trees for a lifetime, planted 200,000 trees here on 240,000 pyeong of Jangtaesan Mountain and cultivated them with all his heart since 1972.

In 1991, as the first private recreational forest in the country, the Metasequoire Forest, the most beautiful on the Korean Peninsula, was created and turned into a scenic spot, one of the eight scenic views of Daejeon.

The teacher was born in 1922 in Hyangan-ri, Nonsan, and after liberation, he participated as the head of the Nonsan area of the Konkuk Youth Corps and participated as an army platoon leader during the Korean War, contributing greatly to the country.

In addition, not only did he contribute to the development of the local community by committing to the construction industry, but he has managed and operated the Jangtaesan Recreation Forest as a public service project since 1992.

In 2002, Daejeon City took over Jangtaesan Recreation Forest and renovated it, and around the time of its reopening, the bust of Lim Chang-bong, who died in 2002, was built in the Metasequoire Forest, a fossil tree, to honor him forever by inheriting his high will and recording his sublime achievements.

인간의 숭고한 뜻을 자연에 쏟아 붓는다면 자연은 있는 그대로 되돌려 준다.

지난 반백년 동안 인간과 함께 성장한 장태산자연휴양림 숲은 세월의 무상함과 자연의 위대함을 다시금 일깨워 준다.

한 평생 나무를 사랑한 독립운동가 송파 임창봉 선생은 1972년부터 이곳 장태산 24만여평에 20만 그루의 나무를 심고 정성을 다해 가꾸었다.

1991년 전국 최초 민간휴양림으로 한반도에서 가장 아름다운 메타세콰이어 수림을 조성하여 대전 8경의 하나인 경승지로 만들었다.

선생은 1922년 논산 향안리에서 출생하였으며 광복후에는 건국청년단 논산지역대장으로 한국전쟁시에는 육군소대장으로 참전하여 국가에 크게 공헌하였다.

또한 건설업에 투신하여 지역사회발전에 기여하였을 뿐만 아니라 1992년부터 장태산휴양림을 공익사업으로 관리운영하였다.

2002년 대전시에서 장태산휴양림을 인수하여 새롭게 단장하고 다시 개장에 즈음하여 2002년 타계한 임창봉 선생의 흉상을 화석나무인 메타세콰이어 숲속에 세워 창립자으,ㅣ 높은 뜻을 계승하고 숭고한 업적을 기록하여 영원토록 기리고 있다.
