금오산 기슭 바위에 새겨진 금오동학 각자는 조선조 중종때 선산 대망동에서 태어난 명필가 덕산인 고산 황기로 선생이 쓴 것으로 금오산은 깊고 그윽한 절경임을 뜻하는 글귀이며 사람을 위압할 큰글씨를 뽐내고 있다.

"귀신 조차도 피하여 달아나게 할 정도이다."라는 초서의 대가 고산 황기로 선생은 중국에서도 왕희지 다음 일인자라 하고 초성이라고 알렸다.

금오동학 각 글자의 크기는 가로, 세로 약 1미터이며 초서로서의 극치를 이루고 있다. 귀신도 물러나게 하는 명필 앞에서 금오산 등산시 기념사진을 찍으면 액땜도 하고 복이 들어올 수 도 있으니 단연코 금오산의 명소라 할 수 있다.

명필은 매우 잘 쓴 글씨를 말하고, 명필가가 되기 위해서는 끊임없는 글씨 쓰기 연습을 해야 한다.

고산은 신사임당의 넷째 아들 옥산 이우의 장인으로써 말년에는 보천탄 위에 매학정을 지어 시서금으로 세월을 보냈다고 한다.

구미성리학역사관에서는 고산 황기로 탄생 500주년을 기념해 특별기획전을 열어 조선시대 최고의 명필가를 기리고 있다.

초서의 성인으로 해동초성이라는 별칭을 가진 고산의 유풍과 유적이 지역사회에 있다는 것은 실로 자랑스러운 일이다.

진주 지방에서 남명학파가 뿌리를 내리는 데 중요한 역할을 한 당대 문장가인 진주선비 송정 하수일은 당나라 명필 장욱과 비견하여 빗대어 황기로를 칭송하며 다음과 같은 시를 지었다.

천년이나 장욱 같은 이 없었는데

황고산이 유일한 사람이로다

한낮에 풍운을 따라 흐르는 듯이
