함석헌은 한민족의 본래 심성인 '어짐의 착함, 날샘의 용기, 지혜로운 덕성'을 바로 다시 살려내고 아름답게 키워가기 위해서는 한민족의 정신과 민족 심성이 다시 정화되고 환골탈퇴되어야 한다고 주장했다.

이를 위해서는 고난을 회피하지 말고 적극적으로 정면돌파해야 하며, 남북통일을 넘어 한민족의 정신적 통합을 대의명분으로 삼아야 한다.

큰 마음은 큰 그릇을 만들고 이는 세상 모든 것을 아우르는 세계의 중심국가로서 갖춰야 할 필요충분조건이다.
