Meeting of the two masters to gauge the future, CEO Lee Jae-myung and writer Yuval Harari's prospects for the AI era

Kang Sun-woo of the Democratic Party of Korea on Mar. 22, the "Lee Jae-myung and N Harari: Telling the AI Era" event was attended by a large crowd of policymakers, tech industry leaders, and citizens who eagerly gathered to hear the insights of the two influential thinkers. The stage was decorated with AI-generated music and AI-co-written scripts, highlighting the broad influence of technology in the debate.

 

Referring to Harari's new work "Nexus," the conversation sought to shed light on the convergence between Lee Jae-myung's political vision and Harari's broad historical perspective on the innovative power of AI.

Lee Jae-myung defends bold state intervention

Known for his progressive economic policies, Lee Jae-myung has defined the AI revolution as both an opportunity and a threat. He acknowledged the potential of AI to dramatically increase productivity and improve lives, but warned of the risk of deepening existing inequalities. Lee declared, "The benefits of this technology should not be left to be concentrated in the hands of a few."

To address this, he proposed a controversial but ambitious plan. The Korean government should actively invest in AI companies to secure significant stakes and share profits with the public. He compared it to creating a "national sovereign fund" for AI, which has already been criticized by some for being overly interventionist.

Recognizing the ideological sensitivity surrounding state intervention in the market, Lee also joked, "I was told that I was a communist for suggesting this."

Harari Warns Of Risk Of Uncontrolled Competition And Disruption Of Confidence

Harari expressed serious concern that AI could stoke global instability with its unique long-term perspective. He argued that distrust and fierce competition among countries are currently creating a dangerous arms race in the field of AI, and that countries are prioritizing speed and dominance over safety and ethical considerations.

"Everyone knows the risks, everyone wants to slow down, but no one believes in a competitor," Harari explained. "They believe that those who dominate AI will dominate the world." He laid out a bleak future for a handful of countries, including the U.S. and China, to monopolize AI technology, leaving the rest of the world behind.

Harari pointed out the similarities between the AI revolution and the Industrial Revolution, stressing that two periods of rapid technological change caused significant social chaos. He cited the example of child labor in 19th century England, where factories exploited children to maximize profits. Eventually, government regulations became necessary to protect the welfare of citizens, and he argued that something similar was needed for AI.

He also raised concerns about the possibility that AI could lead to a global financial crisis by creating complex financial products that even experts could not understand. "We don't want the government to understand finance anymore and put AI in a situation where it controls the financial system," Harari warned.

Harari also noted the stealthy ways in which AI undermines democracy. He argued that social media algorithms designed to maximize user engagement are deliberately spreading hate, anger, and fear, making it increasingly difficult for people to have reasonable conversations.

"We've given control of the conversation to the algorithm," Harari asserted. He urged regulations to prevent fake online personalities and to hold social media companies accountable for the algorithm's actions.

Despite the dismal warnings, both Lee and Harari offered glimmers of hope. Harari emphasized the importance of international cooperation between small nations like Korea in order to prevent AI from becoming an exclusive domain of a superpower. He also emphasized the need for education, which fosters critical thinking and the ability to distinguish between reliable and unreliable information.

Lee agreed with this opinion, and urged Korea to embrace "new design" for the AI era. He stressed that it is time for social discussions and efforts to share the benefits of AI technology development, seek solutions to ethical issues, and preserve human-centered values.

 

The dialogue concluded with a deep sense of responsibility for the changes to come. With Korea on the threshold of a technological revolution, the future depends on the ability to address the ethical, economic, and social challenges posed by AI with wisdom, foresight, and the will to embrace bold new solutions.

이재명, 과감한 국가 개입 옹호

그는 또한 AI가 전문가조차 이해할 수 없는 복잡한 금융 상품을 만들어 글로벌 금융 위기로 이어질 가능성에 대한 우려를 제기했다. 하라리는 "정부가 더 이상 금융을 이해하지 못하고 AI가 금융 시스템을 통제하는 상황에 놓이는 것을 원하지 않는다"고 경고했다.

민주주의의 침식, 알고리즘과 허위 정보의 확산
