WorldShare to provide birth kits to 1,000 refugee mothers at Thailand-Myanmar border

[Korea Distribution Newspaper = Reporter Kim Do-hyung] World Share, an international relief and development NGO, will provide childbirth kits to refugees and migrant mothers on the Thailand-Myanmar border to improve the maternal and child health environment.

WorldShare said it will work with the Mae Tao Clinic (MTC), which is active in the Mae Sot region of northwestern Thailand, to promote a humanitarian aid project to provide childbirth kits to 1,000 refugee and migrant mothers.

Mesot is an area bordering the Thailand-Myanmar border, where Myanmar refugees and migrants who have crossed the border due to long-standing disputes and political instability are concentrated. In particular, as the number of people crossing the border has soared since Myanmar's military coup in 2021, the number of vulnerable people who are marginalized from medical services and livelihood support is also increasing.

Refugee mothers in this region are in a situation where it is difficult to secure basic prenatal care and a safe birth environment due to unstable stay conditions and economic difficulties. In refugee camps with low access to medical facilities, there are many cases where both mothers and newborns are exposed to the risk of infection due to a lack of hygiene products and neonatal care supplies.

The maternity kit supported this time consists of essential items to alleviate this problem. The kit includes basic items necessary for childbirth and early rearing, such as newborn clothing, diapers, sanitary products, disinfection products, and umbilical cord care products. As it is composed to reflect on-site demand, it is expected to be of practical help.

MTC, a cooperative organization, is a local specialized organization that has provided medical, health, and education services to refugees, migrants, and vulnerable people in the Thailand-Myanmar border since its establishment in 1989. In particular, it is playing an important role in the field of maternal and child health, including prenatal management and safe delivery support for unregistered migrants and refugees who have difficulty using the Thai public medical system.

In addition to supporting childbirth kits, WorldShare plans to support portable ultrasound devices to improve the prenatal diagnosis environment and food support projects for the healthy growth of refugee children.

"This birth kit support will be the first safety net to help mothers and newborns start healthy lives," said Jang Hye-joon, chief of World Share's International Business Division. "We will continue to provide support to mothers and children in border areas in the future in cooperation with MTC."

Meanwhile, WorldShare is raising funds for the project through Naver Happy Bean, and anyone can participate. WorldShare is currently carrying out child-centered regional development projects such as group home, overseas child association, education, health, and humanitarian support in more than 20 countries around the world.
