2013년 2월 22일부터 2015년 8월 4일까지 오늘의 명언을 매일 아침 인터넷상에 소개해 올렸다.

가장 먼저 올린 글은 앤드류 매트스였고 두번째는 생 텍쥐베리였으며 세번째 인물과 말은 카토였다.

로마의 정치가로 활동한 대 카토는 BC234년에서 BC149년까지 산 인물이며 소 카토는 그의 증손자로 최후까지 원로원을 사수하고자 노력한 인물이다.

소 카토는 로마 공화정 말기의 정치인으로 율리우스 카이사르와 대적하여 로마 공화정을 수호한 것으로 유명하고 스토아학파의 철학자이기도 했다. 그는 당시 부패가 만연한 로마의 정치 상황에서 완고하고 올곧은, 청렴결백함의 상징적 인물로 유명했다.

카이사르에 대항한 카토는 결국 항복하지 않았다. 카이사르는 자신에게 항복하는 사람들은 관대하게 용서를 했으나 카토는 끝까지 항복하지 않겠다는 의지를 알리기 위해 자결했다.

청렴결백하고 공직자로써 흠을 찾기 어려웠던 카토에 대해 키케로는 그의 사후 '카토'를 써서 찬양했다.

카토는 "인간의 최고의 미덕은 항상 인내다."라는 말을 남겼다.

오랜 과거에도 그랬고 지금도 마찬가지겠지만 언제나 인내는 쓰고 열매는 달다.
