문화도시 조성사업은 문화와 예술을 기반으로 지역 본연의 특색을 지닌 문화자원을 적극 발굴하고 고유한 문화환경 조성을 지원하는 사업이다.

현재 문화체육관광부는 서면과 현장평가, 성과발표회 등을 바탕으로 문화도시 지정 심의를 하고, 2021년 12월 말 ‘법정문화도시’를 지정함으로써 사업비 지원과 함께 사업 과정 전반을 자문해 준다.
