사막에 핀 단명국화, 인간의 기준으로 봤을 땐 짧은 시간동안 존재하나 똑같은 형태의 대를 이어가는 영속성이 있다.

단명국화는 모든 식물중에서 수명이 제일 짧다고 알려져있다.

목본식물은 수명이 긴 반면에 초본식물은 상대적으로 수명이 짧고 이는 식물의 서식환경에 영향을 받는다.

열악한 환경에서 살아남기 위해 딱딱한 외피로 무장한  목본식물에 비해 초본식물은 쉽게 꺽이며 연약하기 그지 없다.

단명국화의 경우는 척박하고 메마른 환경에서 살아남기 위해 단련 기간을 거쳐 생애의 끝에 이르면 신속하게 생장하고 개화하여 빠르게 열매를 맺는다.

척박한 환경인 사막에서 피어나는 사막국화는 2주일 밖에 살지 않지만 큰가뭄이 찾아오기 전에 생애주기를 완성하여 대를 이어간다.
